The ancient 1889 boundaries of the East Riding extended North to Malton and Filey Brigg on the Yorkshire Coast. It followed the banks of the River Derwent which flowed North East from York. The Ouse’s flow marked the Western boundary South West from the ancient capital to where the river enters the Humber Estuary at Goole. Across the water was the ancient county of Lindsey, now known as Lincolnshire.Restructuring in 1974 brought major changes to the East Riding by creating a new county called Humberside.
